Nutritional Therapy for Period Pain
Many women in the western world experience period pain during menstruation. It is common in teenagers and women in their 20's and tends to ease as a women gets older or has children.
Some women will experience period pain at the beginning of the period which may last for 12 to 24 hours, this type of pain usually happens due to a build of chemicals called prostaglandins which cause inflammation within the womb, a build up of prostaglandins can obstruct the flow of blood within the womb to the cervix, contraction from the muscles of the womb to the cervix may also cause pain as the cervix opens to allow blood flow.
Some women may experience period pain during the second half of the menstrual cycle which tends to worsen as the period starts, this is usually due to fluid retention and/or a build up of blood in the pelvic veins.
Some may experience both types of period pain.
Sufferers of endometriosis, fibroids, cysts and pelvic inflammatory disease may also experience painful periods. Women using the coil as a form of birth control may also experience painful periods.
Nutritional Therapy can be helpful for period pain, it works by addressing the root cause of symptoms instead of just treating symptoms, you will be provided with a plan which will include recommendations for dietary changes, lifestyle changes, diagnostic tests and nutritional supplements. We will devise a plan together which will be monitored over a period length of time, a commitment of at least 3 to 6 months is required in order to monitor your progress.
