Nutritional Therapy for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (P.C.O.S)

One in four women suffer from P.C.O.S.  P.C.O.S. sufferers will develop bubble like cysts within the ovaries.  P.C.O.S. can upset menstrual cycles and many women fail to ovulate each month which can further lead to fertility problems.

Normally, a women will grow several follicles in the first half of her menstrual cycle, one of these follicles will become the dominant follicle and will rupture and release an egg.  In P.C.O.S. sufferers, a dominant follicle is not produced, which causes all the follicles to stay within the ovary, without the release of an egg.

P.C.O.S. is also linked with being insensitive to insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that is released by the pancreas in response to carbohydrate foods that we eat, these are foods such as biscuits, cakes, rice, potatoes, pasta etc..  Insulin is needed for the uptake of glucose in our blood stream to be used by our cells, which then gives us a source of energy.

Insulin insensitivity is when our cells have problems in recognising insulin, when this happens it causes the glucose to stay in the blood and rise to high levels, this can cause weight problems.

Due to the insensitivity of insulin on the cells, levels of the hormone in the blood stream can become very high and can raise the levels of certain sex hormones which can cause a number of symptoms to develop.

The sex hormone testosterone is found to be high in P.C.O.S. sufferers, this hormone is normally high in men, although P.C.O.S. women will not have levels as high as that in a man.

P.C.O.S. responds well with the use of Nutritional Therapy.  Changing the diet, adding vital vitamins, minerals and herbs and the addition of a regular exercise regime can really help to kick start the body.

Nutritional Therapy works by addressing the root cause of symptoms instead of just treating symptoms, you will be provided with a plan which will include recommendations for dietary changes, lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing and nutritional supplements.  We will devise a plan together which will be monitored over a length of time.

Nutritional Therapy is not a quick fix diet and needs to be maintained, the programme is a health enhancing diet which will help you to have more energy, will add vital vitamins and minerals to your body and will help you to lead a healthier and happier life.
